Popular Forest
Poplar Forest is a plantation house that at one time belonged to Thomas Jefferson! Jefferson designed the plantation and used the property as a private retreat. After inheriting the property in 1773, Jefferson began designing and working on the plantation in 1806. Jefferson is the most famous individual that lived on the property, but it had several owners before being purchased for refurbishment and exhibition in 1984. In 1971 Poplar Forest became a National Historic Landmark. Today it operates as a historic house museum and houses the nonprofit Corporation that helps to continue the ongoing archaeological study and restoration work at the property.
