Ford aficionados can expect to find the 2018 Ford Expedition, due out in 2017, in a new aluminum coat. Like the F-150, which sports aluminum construction in the current models, the Expedition will be made of this lighter-weight material.
Why Use Aluminum?
Fuel is less costly than it has been in recent history and SUV sales are solid for now, but things can change rapidly. The government’s restrictive emissions and fuel economy standards figure highly in Ford’s decision to utilize this lightweight alloy in an attempt to keep the Expedition a relevant choice to auto buyers over the next few years. The transition to an aluminum body will save several hundred pounds, and it may give a slight edge to fuel mileage.
Competitive Edge
However, with the loss of weight and the economical EcoBoost V6 turbocharged engine, Ford hopes to regain the competition. Although the body will be made of aluminum, the frame will still be the same steel frame that is the foundation of the Expedition and F-150. Ford also plans to introduce four all-new SUVs in the near future.
